Headstone. Dated 1785. Ashlar stone. Shaped head with a depiction in relief of Newhaven Bridge. Inscribed to the brewer Thomas Tipper, whose many good qualities, and those of his ales, are recorded in a fine poem below. The bridge, a drawbridge, was erected two years before Tipper's death, in 1783, and linked Newhaven to Denton. it was designed by John Plaw of London and was demolished in 1865-6. An unusual headstone of considerable historic interest.
