Description
The Thomas Tipper Monument is a headstone located 20 meters west of the porch in Newhaven, dated 1785. It is made of ashlar stone and features a shaped head with a relief depiction of Newhaven Bridge. The monument is inscribed in memory of Thomas Tipper, a brewer, highlighting his many good qualities and those of his ales in a poem below. Tipper's brewery was situated next to the depicted bridge, which was built in 1783, two years before his death, and connected Newhaven to Denton. The bridge, designed by John Plaw of London, was a drawbridge and was demolished between 1865 and 1866. This headstone is notable for its historical significance.
