Description

This building comprises numbers 15, 16, and 16A George Street. Constructed around 1810 to 1820, it is an example of Burton’s building type. The structure is three storeys high and is constructed of stucco, which has been painted. It features a prominent cornice and parapet, with the cornice continuing along the tops of the modern shop fronts. Four pairs of coupled pilasters rise the height of the first and second floors. The first-floor level has round-arched French windows; the two outer windows open onto cast iron balconies, both framed by moulded stucco architraves. The second floor contains three square casements set within moulded architraves. The ground floor currently has 20th-century shop fronts, and number 15 incorporates a reproduction multi-pane bow window set in a recess. Numbers 15, 16 and 16A, along with other listed buildings on George Street, contribute to a notable group value.
