Description

Number 27 Tackleway is a house dating from around 1810. A blue plaque indicates that the poet and novelist George MacDonald lived at the property between 1857 and 1860. The front of the house is plastered and framed by timber, with slate covering the sides and rear. The roof is slate-hipped. The house has three storeys and a basement. The street-facing front has a width of two windows. The left side features sash windows with glazing bars within moulded casings. To the right is a two-storey projection at ground floor level, incorporating a pilastered doorcase, a moulded round-headed surround with a traceried fanlight, and a panelled door. Above the ground floor, the projection includes a canted bay with glazing bars. An area is enclosed by railings. The west front, at the rear of the house and overlooking the town, features a four-storey bow window with original glazing bars. Numbers 26 to 29 Tackleway form a group, with numbers 26 and 29 holding only local interest.
