Description
The drinking fountain, erected in 1865 by local resident Elizabeth Curling, is a cast iron structure that has been restored in 2000. It features a rectangular design with two intertwined dolphins on top that support a restored lantern. The fountain is raised on three octagonal Portland stone steps, which have also been restored. It has a mutule cornice above panels and fasces below. On alternating sides, there are taps, bowls, and two small circular shelves that once held drinking cups, which are now missing. The other faces of the fountain have oval inscription panels, each engraved with 'erected MDCCCLXV'. One panel includes the biblical text 'Jesus said whoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again', while the other states, 'Jesus said whoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst'. Originally located along Seaside, the fountain was moved in the 1950s to the corner of Langney Road and Seaside before being fully restored and relocated to its current position in 2000. Old photographs indicate that it originally had a gas lantern on top.
