Description

This is a K6 telephone kiosk, dating from the 20th century and designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. It is constructed of cast iron, painted red with long horizontal windows in the door and sides, and features applied crown details on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment. The kiosk is in good condition but exhibits small patches of flaking red paint.

The K6 represents a refinement of Scott's earlier K2 telephone kiosk design, being more streamlined, compact and cost-effective to produce. Over 70,000 were made, and they represent a thoughtful adaptation of architectural tradition to technological needs.

The kiosk is situated on the seafront, immediately north of the entrance to the Grade II listed Eastbourne Pier. Approximately 35 metres to the west stands a Grade II bronze statue of a soldier of the Royal Sussex Regiment, and to the west, across the road, is the Grade II listed Belle Vue Hotel.

It is designated at Grade II due to its strong visual relationship with three listed buildings, two of which are Grade II*, and for being a representative example of this iconic 20th-century industrial design within a coastal setting.
