Description
The Deanery is a Grade I listed building constructed in 1901 for Edward Hudson, the owner of Country Life, by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. The gardens were designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The building is situated behind a massive 16th-century brick wall, which is listed separately.
It is a two-storey structure made of brick with some exposed timber, featuring clay tile roofs and wide overhanging eaves. The layout is organized around an inner courtyard, with the main block positioned to the south and wings extending back to the old wall.
The garden front faces south and includes a large, full-height, square glazed timber-framed bay with a hipped roof. There is a semi-circular arched door and a prominent chimney stack that projects from the main wall, featuring three grouped diamond shafts above. Casement windows are located just below the eaves, while the ground floor has mullioned and transomed casements. Additionally, there is another large grouped chimney stack on the ridge and at the rear.
