Description
The gates and piers to North Lodge, built in 1881, are a pair of wrought-iron entrance gates featuring decorative ironwork above, with the date 1881 displayed in the center panel. There is a small matching side gate on the left, set under a pointed brick arch. A wrought-iron lantern on the left gate pier is contemporary with the gates. The large brick gate piers have a dentil course and prominent pyramidal brick caps. These elements are part of a wall on the right that encloses Bishops Close. Together with North Lodge, the gates and piers create a picturesque group. The gates are notable for their striking late 19th-century design in a unique Gothic Revival style and their group value with the adjoining structures.
