Description
The Church of St. John the Evangelist is a parish church built in 1873 by H. Woodyer. It is constructed from flint with Bath stone dressings and features a tiled gabled roof. The church has a four-bay nave, a chancel, a north aisle, and a south porch located in the westernmost bay of the nave, topped with a large two-tier stone bellcote.
The windows include diamond leaded glass, a lancet window in the north aisle, a three-light window in the nave, and two-light stained glass in the chancel, all designed with plate tracery.
Inside, the church features a north arcade supported by circular columns with moulded capitals, a tall stone tripartite chancel screen with moulded capitals on slim columns, and a delicate low wrought iron screen. There is a stone octagonal pulpit with a base of moulded arches and colonnettes, as well as a stone font with a similar base. The roof is supported by arched braced collar roof trusses on corbel brackets, with side purlins, king posts, and wind braces, and the trusses in the chancel are cusped.
