Description

This is a small house located on the north side of Shute End, Wokingham. It dates to the mid-14th century, with alterations in the late 18th century, and a later 20th-century extension and alterations. The house is timber framed and initially encased in brick, with an old tile hipped roof. It has an L-shaped plan, consisting of two timber-framed bays at the front—a former hall in the left bay and a two-bay crosswing to the right—with a 20th-century extension at the rear. The house is two stories high, with a chimney on the left gable. The road front features a rendered plinth and mid-20th century three-light casement windows; those on the ground floor are taller, and the right-hand window has a segmental arch. A 20th-century planked entrance door is situated right of centre, likely on the line of a former screens passage, and is approached by a single step. The interior is largely plain, with a close-coupled collar roof over the hall, which shows signs of soot. The crosswing has a collar purlin roof with a plain central crownpost braced in two directions.
