Description
The Ascot War Memorial is a tall structure made of Portland stone, located on the High Street outside the entrance to Ascot Racecourse Stables. It features a blind wheel-head cross atop an octagonal shaft and moulded foot, all resting on a base. The base consists of an octagonal drum with a shallow circular head, which is supported by a chamfered octagonal plinth raised on a low octagonal step.
The inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" is carved in relief around part of the circular head of the base, with a blank scroll occupying the remaining space. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the base reads "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ASCOT WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914-1919." Names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the other faces of the base. The names from the Second World War, along with the dedication "ALSO TO THOSE WHO DIED 1939-1945," are inscribed on the chamfered plinth.
