Description

The Church Rooms, located south of the Church of St Stephen, were built in 1872 by Henry Woodyer. They are constructed of English bond stock brick with blue brick accents, a moulded red brick stringcourse, and Bath stone dressings. The building features a battered brick plinth and a plain tile roof with gabled ends, corbelled brick eaves, and verges. It has axial, gable-end, and lateral stacks, with the lateral stack exhibiting brick tumbling and a truncated shaft. The design reflects the High Victorian Gothic style.

The plan is L-shaped, with a short wing at the north end. The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical west front. On the left, there is a projecting gable with a splayed stack and set-offs, flanked by lancet windows. To the right is a long range that includes a lean-to porch at the angle and a gabled porch slightly right of centre, featuring lancet windows that break the eaves on the first floor. One of the first-floor windows is set in a small tile-hung gable. The lateral stack on the left has brick tumbling to set-offs, a truncated shaft, and a tablet inscribed with "SS". A moulded brick stringcourse is raised over this tablet on the gable end stack to the right and over the splayed and corbelled right-hand corner. The south gable end has a canted and corbelled oriel with lancets, flanked by tablets and blue brick bands above. The ground floor features two-light lancets with a brick shaft in between that rises to the oriel. The north side of the north cross-wing has tile-hung gabled dormers, and on the rear (east), the first-floor windows also break the eaves. The interior has not been inspected.
