Description

A group of 12 headstones and 12 footstones is located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, about 5 metres south of the west end of the nave. These monuments date from the 18th century and commemorate various members of the Pitt and Benwell families. The stone footstones feature only initials and dates, while the stone-carved headstones display varying designs, mostly depicting seraphims. Many names and dates on the headstones have eroded over time. Notably, the second monument from the left is a Benwell monument dated 1725, the fifth is a Pitt monument dated 1747, and the sixth is also dated 1747.
