Description

King John's Hunting Lodge is a late 15th to early 16th century timber-framed house that was restored in 1930 and again in 1978. It stands three stories tall and features a two-story jettied porch connected to a former aisled hall on the south side. The building has an old tiled gabled roof and its timber-framed walls are infilled with plaster and brick nogging, although some sections have been replaced with modern brick. The windows are modern leaded casements.

The porch showcases a four-centred arch with quatrefoils in the spandrels, and the first floor has a three-light window with wooden mullions. Inside, the lodge contains many original timbers and moulded beams, including a 16th to 17th century door with lambs tongue stops on the ground floor. The main fireplaces on both the ground and first floors date to the 16th century and feature four-centred stone arches with foliage carving in the spandrels. The hall, which is open to the roof, has two arcade posts with moulded capitals on the south wall, flanking a later fireplace.

The building has been extensively restored and remodelled in modern times, incorporating some reused timbers and modern leaded casement windows. Notably, a 14th century scissor brace truss has been inserted, along with a redundant moulded crown post. A moulded beam, likely from around 1500, runs east-west at the north end under a gallery, adding to the historical interest of the structure.
