Description

A group of 48 red brick cottages, built in 1855. They were designed by Henry Roberts for the Royal Windsor Society, in consultation with Prince Albert. The cottages are arranged around a green, and are simple, with gabled roofs covered in slate. They are two storeys high, with some having a first-floor room in a gabled attic, while others have gabled dormers. The windows are casements with chamfered openings, with two lights on the upper floor and three lights on the ground floor. The cottages are grouped in pairs or threes. Nos. 7 to 14 form a single block with two gabled breaks on either side of a recessed centre, which features an external stair leading to a first-floor gallery. Nos 31 and 33, on the opposite side of the green, have particularly steep gables. The pairs with a single-and-a-half stories and gabled dormers have decorative “toothed” brickwork along the eaves. Nos. 1 to 56 (consecutively numbered) form a unified group.
