Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church located on Stanwell Road, dating back to the 12th century. It features a three-bay nave with church walls and a finely ornamented Norman north doorway. The north transept was added in the 15th century, and the late 16th-century tower is constructed of flint, with some early brick and dressed stone quoins. The church underwent restoration in 1875-76, which included the chancel, south aisle, and vestry.
Inside, the nave roof has chamfered crown posts that are traced two ways onto collar purlins. There is a simple 12th-century font with a large twisted edge roll and a modern base. Traces of early decoration can be seen on the soffit of the west nave arch. East of the arches in the south arcade, a flight of stone steps leads through a two-centred arched doorway to the former rood-loft that spanned the chancel arch. A piscina is located to the right of the altar in the Lady Chapel. The stained glass windows were created in 1882 by Kemp.
Notable monuments include a ledger stone in the chancel for Sarah Milton, mother of the poet, dated 1637, and a cartouche with swags and an escutcheon for Robert Narmey from 1734 on the north wall.
