Description

Garden Cottage at Hall Place is a house dating back to the 17th century, largely rebuilt in the 18th century, with extensions added in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick and flint, with old tile gabled roofs. The house has a rectangular plan, double depth, and features two unequal gables and a lean-to extension at the rear. It has two storeys and a cellar. Two chimneys are located at the rear.

The front facade is symmetrical, originally with five bays, now presenting a three-bay appearance. Sash windows with glazing bars are found in the second and fourth bays, while the window openings in the first and fifth bays have been blocked with flint, all within segmental brick arches. A small two-light window is set under the eaves in the centre bay, within a blocked opening consistent with the others. A disused six-panelled entrance door, with a two-pane overlight, sits beneath this, and is protected by a 19th-century gabled porch, incorporating carved bargeboards and trellis side panels.

Inside, the sitting room features late 17th-century panelling, while the study has exposed joists and panelled doors. A notable feature is a late 17th-century staircase with turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and closed string.
