Description
Northcote House, now serving as offices and a training college, is a large country house built in 1930 by W.E. Lord for Sir Hugo Cunliffe-Owen. The building features a rectangular plan with a central staircase hall and is finished in painted render. It stands two storeys tall and is characterized by sash windows with glazing bars, floating cornices on the ground floor, and moulded architraves on the first floor. A moulded cornice runs along the parapet.
The entrance front, facing west, is symmetrical with 11 bays and a slightly projecting central feature of 3 bays. It is adorned with giant columns that support an entablature and pediment in the Ionic order, with Doric pilasters at the corners and at the 4th and 8th bays. The entrance includes panelled double doors, and a coat of arms is displayed in the tympanum.
Inside, the staircase hall is two storeys high and features a quadripartite bossed roof. One side of the ground floor is occupied by an Imperial staircase, which has a plain open iron baluster at the foot and stone balustrading pierced with foliated roundels on the upper levels. Other rooms within the house are enhanced by marble fireplaces and enriched ceiling cornices.
