Description
Windsor Castle is England's largest castle and a royal palace, covering approximately 13 acres. The castle dates back to William the Conqueror, but the first stone buildings were constructed by Henry II between 1165 and 1179. The round keep is situated on an artificial motte, and there are baileys known as the Lower, Middle, and Upper Wards. There have been continuous additions since its inception, particularly after Edward III founded the Order of the Garter in 1348, leading to the construction of St George's Chapel between 1475 and 1511, and extensive rebuilding for Charles II by Hugh May. The current appearance of the castle is largely due to alterations, additions, and restorations made by James Wyatt and Sir Jeffry Wyatville around 1800 to 1830, with further work by Blore and Salvin during Queen Victoria's reign. The castle is set on a dominant cliff-top location, with a terrace garden featuring stone revetments and statuary to the east of the ridge.
