Description

This building, known as No. 1 (The Barn), is a large threshing barn that has been converted into a row of four houses. It dates back to the early 16th century and was altered in 1984. The structure features a timber frame, is weatherboarded, and has an old tile gabled roof. It has a rectangular plan with eight framed bays and two former midstreys facing east. The building is two storeys high and includes 20th-century casement windows, with some full-height windows.

On the entrance front, which faces east, the left-hand gable has one bay with composite windows. To the left of this gable, there are two first-floor windows with three and five lights. The ground floor features a 20th-century plank entrance door with a small glazed panel and two three-light windows. The right gable has three-light windows, and to the right of this gable, there is a three-light window on the first floor and a full-height window below it, accompanied by a 20th-century plank entrance door and a rooflight above. The central section has full-height glazing at each end, including a 20th-century plank entrance door, with two single-light windows in between and two roof lights.

Inside, the barn showcases a fine timber frame that is mostly exposed, with queen post roof trusses, clapped purlins, and jowled posts. Carpenter's marks are visible in the correct sequence, and there are rafter holes at the feet facing south.
