Description

The Little Lodge is a house built in 1924, designed by architect Ernest Trobridge for Francis Bates. The original thatched roof was replaced in 1928. The building features a timber frame clad in wavy weatherboarding, with pantile roofs that have gabled ends, deep verges, and sprocketed eaves with swept-up plastered soffits. A buff-coloured brick axial stack with stepped set-offs is present.

The house has an asymmetrical plan, with a central axial stack, a porch, and a service wing on the north side, reflecting a Domestic Revival style. It is one storey with an attic and has asymmetrical elevations. The north entrance front showcases a large gable with a stair window, a window on the left corner, and a lower wing projecting on the right, which includes an integral recessed porch and a corner window on the left, along with a tall canted bay window on the right, where the roof sweeps down to low eaves. The west side features a roof that extends over an integral outshut and a bay window on the left, with deeper eaves on the right. The east elevation has a canted gable at the centre, while the south elevation is gabled with corner windows on both sides and a central French casement, topped by a large hipped roof bay with very small flanking windows. All casements are fitted with small leaded panes.

The interior remains intact, featuring walls lined with panels of compressed wet elm, a material that Trobridge showcased at the 1918-20 Ideal Home Exhibitions. The staircase has a simple balustrade made of stick balusters and square newels, along with fitted furniture.
