Description

Hopgrass Farm House is a 17th-century house with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, dated on the south front "1879. P.A.L. 1649". The south side is roughcast with stone surrounds to the windows in the gables and stone coping to the gable parapets. The north side is variegated brick with a parapet, a stone modillion cornice, and rubbed brick arches over the windows and door. A brick and timber-frame wing extends to the west. The house has tiled roofs with end chimneys to the main block and a central chimney to the west wing.

The main block has two short gabled crosswings to the south, the earlier side which has been refronted and extended to the north. The south elevation is symmetrical with flanking gables. Each gable has a two-light stone mullioned window, with mullion and transomed casements below. There is a three-light window to the west and a two-light window in the centre, with similar windows to the east. A 20th-century canted bay is at ground-floor level on the east and a 20th-century porch is in the centre. The west wing has a long catslide roof with irregular casements below.

The north elevation features three tripartite glazing bar sashes, with brick architraves and pilasters acting as mullions, decorated with Adam-style caps on the first floor. A central door is set under a semi-circular arch with a slightly modelled swag in the tympanum, flanked by fluted columns and an architrave with paterae. Flanking the door are two tripartite glazing bar sashes with central semi-circular heads and fluted tympana.
