Description

Weirpool is a house dating from around 1650, with alterations and additions made by Leonard Stokes around 1900. The building features a timber frame that is rendered, with later additions in rendered brick. It has tile-hung gable ends on the north and south sides, and an old tile roof. The house is designed in an L-plan lobby entrance style and consists of four framed bays, with additional sections to the north and west, including a canted bay to the west. It is two storeys high, with a 1.5-storey section to the north-east. The house has moulded gutters, ridge stacks on the north and south, and an end stack on the east.

On the north front, the left-hand block has a large gable with a four-light casement window on the first floor, and two flat-topped canted bays below featuring glazing bar sashes and a central half-glazed door with projecting flat hoods. There is a passageway to the right with a boarded door in the left-hand return front. The right-hand block has a two-light casement window on the first floor to the left, and an open ground floor with a round-arched loggia. The gable end to the right has a first-floor cross window flanked by two-light casements.

Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase with a newel and cut balusters. The fittings, designed by Stokes in a quiet free neo-Georgian style, include fireplaces, panelling, mouldings, and notably, a classical inglenook with flanking seats, cupboards, shelves, and two small windows. These alterations and additions are considered competent and sensitive, reflecting the Arts and Crafts tradition.
