Description

The Church of St. Frideswide is a Grade II* listed church located in Frilsham, built in the 12th century with a 15th-century chancel and a west tower and porch added around 1837. The structure is made of flint, tile, and rubble with stone dressings, while the west tower and porch are constructed from red brick with Bath stone dressings, topped with tiled roofs. The church features a west tower, nave (which includes a narrower 12th-century chancel), a south porch, and the chancel itself.

The west tower has two stages, string courses, and a battlemented parapet with stone coping. It includes louvred lancet bell chamber openings with returned hoodmoulds on the north, south, and west faces, and a clock above the northern opening. The south side has a studded and panelled arched door and a lancet window to the west, both with returned hoodmoulds.

The nave features lancet windows with returned hoodmoulds flanking the tower at the west end. On the south side, there is a south-west door with a simple moulded 12th-century round arch and a boarded door with some old ironwork. To the right are two windows with three cusped lights under segmental heads, one dating from the 19th century and the other from the 15th century. The north side has two re-worked 12th-century windows to the left and a 12th-century doorway to the right, which includes one order with shafts, moulded bases, scalloped capitals, and impost mouldings. There is also a 19th-century door under a segmental arch. A stone in the gable end to the east above the chancel bears the initials R.L.R.P.

The south porch is made of brick with a plinth, cornice, and a battlemented parapet with stone coping. It features a four-centered moulded arch with carved trefoils in the spandrels and shafts with moulded capitals and bases.

Inside, the church has a 17th-century arch-braced double purlin nave roof with tie beams, collars, and windbraces, alongside a 19th-century chancel roof with arches and wind braces. There is a 20th-century west gallery, possibly a 12th-century font, a Jacobean pulpit, and a reader's desk. The chancel arch from the 19th century has a round arch and shafts.
