Description
The Gatehouse and Bursar's Office at Bradfield College is a building that originally served as a barn from the 16th century. It was rebuilt and expanded around 1865, likely by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. The structure features a plinth made of flint and red brick, supported by stone-dressed buttresses. The later additions include red brick with grey diapering, flint with brick dressings and lacing courses.
The first floor on the left has diapered tile hanging, while the area above the entrance, which is off-centre to the right, showcases timber framing with curved bracing and herringbone brick nogging. The roof is covered with old tiles and is slightly lower on the right side. Above the entrance, there is a large projecting gabled semi-dormer featuring timber framing and brick nogging, along with a three-light casement window.
To the right, there are two tile-hung gabled semi-dormers with two-light casements, and to the left, three tile-hung gabled semi-dormers, two of which have three sash windows and one with a single sash window. The building has an end stack to the left, a central ridge stack, and another stack at the front between the second and third semi-dormers from the left, which is diapered and multi-shafted with oversailing tops.
The building is one and a half storeys high, with a small twin sash window under the eaves between the third and fourth semi-dormers from the left. On the ground floor, there are three three-light casements to the left and one 20th-century casement to the right. A large vehicular entrance, located off-centre to the right, is adorned with wrought iron gates. Additionally, there is one casement window on each floor in the gable end to the right.
On the north-west front, there are two tile-hung gabled semi-dormers to the right with twin sashes, and two gabled semi-dormers to the left featuring timber framing and brick nogging in the gables, each with two-light casements. The ground floor to the right has one one-light and one two-light casement window, and there is a doorway at the side under the vehicular entrance to the left.
