Description
The Methodist Chapel, built between 1837 and 1838, is a non-conformist chapel designed in a quasi-Early English style. It features a three-bay front with a prominent central entrance bay and a five-bay return, constructed from Bath stone ashlar and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The chapel has a parapet with modillion brackets that extend to form coped gables at the ends, alongside shallow buttresses with weathered offsets. The central entrance bay is flanked by six-stage, octagonal buttress-turrets that are capped with cupolas and finials. The façade includes lancet windows with hood moulds, a three-light window, and a quatrefoil lunette in the gable. The entrance features a central arched porch with hollow moulding and an ogee hood-mould topped with a finial, along with smaller flanking doorways added to the porch.
Inside, the chapel boasts a very rare and unaltered Gothic interior, with galleries on all four sides supported by elongated Corinthian columns made of cast iron. The gallery parapet is adorned with arcaded panels and a moulded rail. An octagonal stone pulpit is located in front of the communion recess, which also features arcaded panels and is accessed by an elegant wooden staircase with wrought iron railings. The communion table is situated in a three-bay recess that is arcaded, accompanied by a communion rail and painted tables displaying the Lord's Prayer, Creed, and Commandments. An organ is located at the west end over the gallery, enclosed in a carved wooden case. The flat ceiling is detailed with moulded ribs, foliated corbels, and ceiling roses. Originally, the stone font was placed alongside the pulpit but has since been moved to the side aisle; it is now a portable font basin with a cover, supported on an octagonal column.
The chapel is listed as Grade II* due to its rarity and significance as a well-preserved example of an early 19th-century Methodist church interior.
