Description
No. 42 Northbrook Street is a building dating from around 1724, as indicated by the date and monogram found in the spandrels of the Venetian first floor window. The structure features two storeys and a central attic dormer with a pediment. Its symmetrical front has three bays and is topped with a slate roof. The exterior is finished with stucco rendering over brick, accented by Portland stone ashlar dressings.
The first floor is distinguished by Composite Order pilasters between the bays, supporting a modillioned entablature. The central first floor window is of Venetian design, featuring small Ionic pilasters and a single central light that is glazed. The flanking windows are set in arched recesses, each adorned with keystones carved with children's figures. The attic window is also in an arched recess and has a plain keystone. The windows were reglazed in the early 19th century with sash windows that include glazing bars. Originally, the front was crowned with four figures representing the seasons. The interior has been rebuilt.
