Description
Wormstall is a country house built in the mid-19th century in an Italianate style. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features slate hipped roofs. The building has a double rectangle plan with a west service wing. The main block consists of two storeys and a basement, while the west wing has three storeys and a basement.
The house has distinctive architectural elements, including arcaded, bracketed, and corniced brick chimneys with stone cappings. The ground floor is channelled, and the building features vermiculated quoins, voussoirs, and keystones on the ground floor, along with a wide first-floor band and a moulded plinth.
On the north elevation, the main block has slight forward breaks on the flanking panels, each containing two plain sash windows. The central section features a pair of coupled sashes flanked by single sashes. The ground floor has a central closed porch supported by double Ionic columns, which hold up a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The entrance has central semi-circular headed double doors with bolection moulded panels, surrounded by Corinthian pilasters that support a moulded arch with a keystone. This entrance is approached by five stone steps, which are flanked by a stone balustrade and urns.
The west wing is set back slightly and has a plain finish with a first-floor band. It features two cross-glazed sashes on the upper floors and two glazing bar sashes on the ground floor.
On the south elevation, the main block has five sashes on the first floor, each with sliding shutters in architrave surrounds that have shoulders, curved heads, and keystones. The ground floor has large canted bays with three sashes, each topped with bracketed cornices and blocking courses, flanking a central semi-circular headed French casement. This is surrounded by Tuscan pilasters that support a frieze, cornice, and blocking course.
