Description
Sole Farm House is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the 17th century, with refacing from the 18th century and additions from the 19th century. The building is constructed of flint with brick dressings, and features a combination of brick and timber framing with brick infill, topped with plain tiled roofs. It consists of a two-bay main house with a two-bay cross wing and a stair tower, and is surrounded by later additions at the rear. The house is one and a half storeys high, with three gabled eaves dormers on the west side, and flanking and central ridge stacks.
On the west elevation, the main body of the house is to the left, featuring flint facing with red brick strips that create a pattern of rectangles. There is a door under a gabled porch to the left, a casement window, and a glazing bar sash window in the center, along with a door under a lean-to porch next to the cross wing. The eaves dormers are positioned above, and the ridge of the main house is higher than that of the cross wing, which is to the right and has a brick facing with one casement window on each floor.
The south elevation shows two bays of timber framing with straight braces on the left, and a brick extension with red stretchers and grey headers on the right. There is a large 17th-century brick stack in English bond across the left-hand bay of the timber framing. A 20th-century door and casement window are located in the central bay, with a two-light casement window above.
Inside, the interior has been altered, but much of the framing remains visible. The central stack features large fireplaces, including one in the kitchen with a moulded cambered beam and shelf above. The staircase is a 17th-century framed newel stair with turned balusters.
