Description
24 Market Place is an early 19th century rebuild of the former Hart Inn, which dates back to 1627. By 1848, it was known as the White Hart Inn and incorporated Nos 20 and 22. The building has three storeys and features a double front with three windows. It has a hipped slate roof with a coved eaves cornice and is finished in stucco. The windows are recessed sash types with keys and bowed glazing on the ground and first floors. The entrance has a wooden doorcase with pilasters and short sections of frieze that support a projecting cornice. The doorway includes a rectangular, patterned fanlight and a panelled door. The north side of the building has four windows, some of which are blocked, and features sidelights and arched centre lights on the second floor. An old wooden window frame that was removed in 1924-25 was said to be dated "1516". The return side has a plain band at the first floor level and a cornice at the second floor level. At the rear, there is a mid-19th century extension, built before 1849, which includes splayed bay windows.
