Description

COMBE SU 36 SE 15/1 Wrights Farm House II* Farmhouse now 2 houses and post office. C14 with C19 fronting. Brick front to East, timber frame with rendered infill to North and flint and brick dressings to West. Tiled roof with half hip to North, ridge chimneys to South flank and one bay from North. 2 storeys. East front: Wide glazing bar sashes flanking door under gabled porch with narrow sash over, 2 further sashes to right the left of which is blocked on the first floor. Under a catslide roof on the Western side of the house can be seen the head of a 4 light window with cusped tops to lights under eaves. North Wall has large cruck frame exposed. Interior: 5 bays of crucks; in the roof 2 bays to the South are clean, three short central bays are sooted and the purlins chamfered and stopped with arch braces to the central collar ties, the North bay is longer and sooted, all bays have large curved windbraces below the purlins. While ground and first floors are on the surface C19 the cruck frames can be traced to ground level and from the roof it is evident that some of the early infill walls remain. The chimney at the southern end of the North bay has C16 brickwork in it, while the extreme southern end of the roof is C19 and C20.
