Description
The Church of St. Swithin is a Grade I listed building located in Combe. It dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, with 17th-century additions, including a date stone from 1652. The church is constructed of flint with some brick, featuring Bath stone quoins, dressings, and plinth buttresses at the east end, along with a moulded string course. The tower has timber shingles on a timber frame over a flint plinth, while the nave and chancel, as well as the south porch, have lead roofs. The tower has a square shape and consists of two stages that reduce in area at the top, with a single louvre in the upper stage. The south porch is gabled and features a semi-circular headed doorway made of brick, complete with a brick label and chamfered imposts, and a date stone above the door.
The nave contains square-headed two- and three-light windows with cusped lights, with two on the south side and three on the north side, along with a central north door. The chancel has a south door with a two-centred arch, a label mould that includes a carved head to the right and a mass clock to the left, as well as one lancet window. The east end features a two-light window with plate tracery under a two-centred arch.
Inside, the porch roof has 17th-century queen struts braced with butt purlins. The chancel arch is tall and thin with a pointed shape, and the chancel roof, dating from the 17th century, includes moulded tie beams and short king posts. The nave roof is similar to that of the chancel but was replaced in 1933. The church also has a plain bowl font set on a 14th-century base.
