Description

An early 19th century terrace of houses and shops, which has been altered over time. The terrace comprises numbers 40 to 45 on Bartholomew Street. The properties are two storeys high with dormers. Each property has two or three windows. The roofs are tiled, with Nos 44 and 45 having recently renewed roofs. Brick ridge stacks with moulded caps are present. Nos 40 and 41 are built of brick, while Nos 42 to 45 have stucco frontages. Nos 40 to 43 have sash dormers with raking roofs, while Nos 44 and 45 have more modern casement dormers. The recessed sash windows feature glazing bars, although Nos 43 and 43A have modern metal windows on the first floor and No 45 has a first-floor window with a side light. Nos 40 to 43A feature a late 19th century shopfront with consoles framing the fascias. No 49 has a recessed doorway with a half-glazed door. No 45 has an early 19th century shopfront with pilasters that support an entablature with a projecting cornice, as well as a shop doorway with a fanlight and a half-glazed door. At the rear of No 45 is a former early 19th century cottage, which now forms part of the main premises; it is two storeys high with two windows, a tile roof, a brick ridge stack, segmental arched, flush-framed sash windows with glazing bars, and a doorway with a segmental wooden hood.
