Description

No. 42 High Street is a building that was originally a national school, founded in 1814, and is now used as showrooms and offices. It features a hipped slate roof and a dentil course at the eaves. The structure is made of brick, with grey headers and red stretchers, and consists of two storeys. The facade has four bays separated by brick piers, with tripartite 20th-century glazing bar sash windows set in wide openings that have cambered heads. There is a door on the left side of the ground floor, which is 20th-century and located in a semicircular headed opening with a radiating fanlight. A terracotta plaque on the ground floor indicates that this building served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment hospital during the Great War.
