Parish Church of St Michael

The Parish Church of St Michael is a church that dates from the 12th, 13th, and 15th centuries. It underwent partial restoration in 1878-9 and 1885, and was generally restored and rebuilt in 1893. The church is constructed of flint, with brick and tile lacing courses, and features stone dressings. It has a tiled roof with a half hip to the west and catslides over the aisles.

The nave includes a bellcote, north and south aisles, a north porch, and a 13th-century chancel. The west end of the nave has a central doorway with a hood mould, a string course, and triple lancets under one hood mould above. There are buttresses on either side with one-light windows at the west ends of the aisles, and a stack above the right buttress. A timber belfry with a pyramidal cap and weathervane sits on the ridge above.

The south aisle features a central re-set 12th-century doorway and two sundials in the east jambs. Above, there is a re-set head of a possibly 12th-century window or piscina. To the right and left, there are square-headed windows with three cusped ogee lights and gables above. A two-light window at the east end also has cusped heads. The north aisle has a square-headed door to the west and a gabled timber porch. There are two gables to the east with paired lancets beneath, and a two-light window to the east with cusped heads.

The chancel has two 13th-century lancets on the north and south sides, and diagonal brick buttresses at the east end support an east window with three lights and a depressed arch under a square head with a hood mould.

Inside, the church features 12th-century nave arcades to the north and south of three bays, with squat piers that are square to the west and round to the east. The half-round piers are on the east and west walls, and the square abacai have scalloped and fluted capitals. The capitals on the round piers have stylized leaves, and the bases have spurs. The north aisle contains an old bench, a 12th-century font, and an arcaded round tub to the west. The chancel arch, built in 1893, incorporates 12th-century imposts. Above the continuous string in the chancel are shafted lancets, and there is a trefoiled double piscina in the south wall. A painting of the Annunciation is located at the east end of the north wall. All other fittings and roofs are from the 19th century.
