Description
Sulham Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house, flat, and office. It dates from around 1580, with a 17th century addition at the rear right, an 18th century refacing and addition at the rear left, and a 20th century addition at the rear. The building features a timber frame with close studding and angle braces visible at the rear, along with later red brick additions. The 18th century refacing includes white painted brick beneath the jetty, a moulded bressumer, and a rendered first floor. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, featuring a dentil brick eaves cornice. There are two large 16th century stacks and two 20th century stacks at the rear, as well as an end stack on the left wing at the rear. The building is U-shaped, comprising five framed bays and a later one-bay wing at the rear right. It has two storeys, with a one-storey wing at the rear.
The front has four first floor horizontal sliding glazing bar sashes, and two ground floor glazing bar sashes flanking a three-light 20th century casement window off-centre to the left, with a small 20th century casement window off-centre to the right. All windows have panelled shutters. There is a six-panelled door with glazed upper four panels located between the first and second windows from the right, and a gabled timber porch with decorative barge boards. A Sun Insurance plate is positioned between the first and second first floor windows from the left, and there are two entrances to the south.
Inside, the farmhouse features moulded beams, re-ordered linenfold panelling, a 16th century wall painting in the first floor room to the right, and a partially rebuilt 16th century fireplace in the ground floor room to the left. There are also two early 18th century carved fireplace surrounds and an 18th century shell niche with a carved surround in the ground floor room to the right.
