BRADFIELD Big School, approximately 50 metres to north west of Chapel, Bradfield College
GV II
Hall with library above. 1872, by John Oldrid Scott in a neo-Gothic style. Flint with brick dressings, lacing courses, diaper work, tiled window heads and relieving arches, plinth, and clasping buttresses. Bath stone dressings. Old tile roof, with lean-to north and south aisles, and end ridge stack to east with four diagonally set shafts. Four gabled semi dormers to north and south with two-light windows and quatrefoil in plate tracery above, except that to north-east which is larger with three stepped cusped lancets. Four bays with aisles. One and a half storeys. First floor quatrefoil window to north-east, and two ground floor cusped windows below. Ground floor cusped window to south-east in small lean to. Four segmental arched aisle windows to south with C20 casements and three to north. Three ground floor cusped lancets to west, flanked by cusped lancets in ends of aisles, and large first floor arched window in gable end above with four stepped cusped lights.
Interior: north and south aisle arcades with chamfered arches, and square piers with shafted corners and moulded capitals and bases. Fireplace to east with large hood.
