Description
The Red Lion Inn, located at No 55 High Street, is a building dating from the late 15th century to the early 16th century. The facade features three storeys with 20th-century imitation timber-framing, but behind this is a well-preserved late medieval timber-framed hall-house. The western part of the building, which has two storeys and a gabled attic, likely represents the original solar. At the rear is a very high hall that spans three bays and extends to the tiebeam roof, which has windbraces and was probably altered in the 17th century.
A screened passageway with a balustraded gallery above runs along the north side of two bays at first floor level. The three posts supporting the gallery and most of the boarded partition are original, while the balustrade features flat-shaped balusters that likely date from the 16th century. The eastern bay contains a wide screened gallery at first floor level.
There are two stone fireplaces, probably from the early 16th century, built into the hall against the south wall of the eastern bay and in the ground floor eastern chamber. These fireplaces have moulded four-centred arches and rounded tracery patterns in square panels on the front of the overmantel. Below the hall is a medieval vault, which likely remains from an earlier house on the site. This vault is reputed to be the 'Court room' where the intended assassins of Henry V—Lord Scrops of Masham, Sir Thomas Grey, and the Earl of Cambridge—were tried in 1415 while Henry V was in Southampton preparing for the battles of Harfleur and Agincourt.
