Description
The Parish Church of St Mary with Holy Trinity is a massive church built between 1878 and 1884, designed by G E Street, located on the site of a significant medieval collegiate church. The church was severely damaged during the Second World War and was rebuilt from 1954 to 1956, retaining Street's steeple and some of the outer walls. The structure is made of ashlar, featuring a 20th-century nave with buttresses, a clerestory with plain modern lancets, and a slate roof. The large tower, constructed around 1880, is divided into three stages and has a broached spire with lucarnes added in 1914, also designed by Street. The baptistry from around 1880 still exists and includes stained glass by Clayton and Bell. Additionally, the reredos depicting the Nativity by Earp remains intact. The church is noted for its impressive tower and steeple, which serve as a local landmark.
