Description
Water Gate Tower, located at Town Quay in Southampton, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. It is the remains of the Watergate, which served as the south gate of the town. The structure is built of stone rubble and features a drum tower that rises three storeys, with part of a fourth storey, and includes three arched windows. An additional three-storey rectangular tower was added to the west in the early 15th century. The south facade has a central section that is recessed between buttresses and is topped with a parapet that has machicolations supported by three stepped corbels. Each floor contains remnants of garderobes, and there is a four-centred doorway. To the north, there is a late 15th-century extension, where the west wall retains a two-light square-headed window. The tower is also scheduled as an ancient monument.
