Description

Canute's Palace is the remains of a two-storey late 12th century merchant's house, designed in the upper hall-house style. The eastern upper room may have served as a counting house or place of business. The walls are made of uncoursed rubble, featuring a later Norman window with two round-headed lights set within a round-headed hooded frame. The west gable reaches full height but has been mostly rebuilt and includes a round-headed window with a double round-headed arch. The site is scheduled as an ancient monument.
