Description
17 and 18 King Street is a mid- to late-18th century shophouse that has been extended and remodeled during the 19th and later 20th centuries. The front elevation facing north is finished with stucco and features a modern glazed shopfront, while the rear is constructed of exposed brick.
The building consists of two volumes, with the main front volume rising four storeys and stepping down to a three-storey range at the rear to the south. The street-facing elevation, excluding the modern shopfront, showcases a full-height canted bay. At the top, there is a timber modillion cornice topped by a stucco parapet. Each of the first, second, and third floors has three six-over-six glazed timber sash windows set in moulded timber frames, separated by moulded mullions. A narrow timber course runs along each floor. The late-20th century shopfront features a full-height canted shop window with a recessed entrance that includes a glazed door with a rectangular overlight and a grey tiled floor. Above the shopfront is a deep timber fascia board. The original roof has been replaced with a flat roof as part of the reconstruction of the rear range.
Inside, the building is believed to contain a contemporary four-flight staircase between the first and second floors, featuring turned timber balusters and one shaped newel. There is also a modest amount of original panelling and a fireplace on the first floor, along with a stair landing at the rear on the first floor.
