Description

The George Hotel is a historic building located at King Street, first mentioned in 1423. It was constructed at various times around a courtyard, with one entrance from King Street and a secondary entrance from Minster Street. The front of the building on King Street features Nos 11 and 12, which have a modern fake timber design, although original timber members are still present. This section is three storeys high and includes four modern windows, two angled bay windows on the ground floor, and a central carriage arch.

Nos 8 and 9, which return to Minster Street, are four storeys tall and were built in the early 19th century. They are finished in stucco with a slate roof, featuring a rounded corner, a moulded cornice above the second floor, and a moulded coping on the parapet. No 9 has two modern casement windows, while No 8 has three windows on the curve, with two-storey framing pilaster strips on the ground floor that extend to Minster Street. Most windows are glazing bar sashes, except on the first floor.

Nos 62 and 63 have raised surrounds and cornices at the first floor level. No 61 has a slight break in the facade, framed by Ionic pilasters, with incised pilasters on the outer edges and pedimented windows on the first floor. There is also a three-storey, three-window brick and tile extension facing Yeild Hall Lane, with a ground floor that features a continuous range of modern glazing bar shop windows. The courtyard is cobbled, and the facades are primarily 18th-century painted brick, showcasing various groups of 18th-century and early 19th-century windows, with the south block displaying a brick block cornice.
