Description
48 and 49 Market Place is a former terrace of shops and flats, now used as offices. It was built around the mid-18th century and altered in the mid-20th century.
The principal north elevation is faced in stucco, while the rear elevation is constructed of brick, topped with a slate-covered roof. The building is a four-storey terraced property.
The main stucco-faced front elevation is four bays wide and four storeys high. It features banded rustication on the ground floor, which includes, from left to right, three round-headed six-over-six sash windows and the main entrance, consisting of six-panelled double doors under a fanlight with a moulded surround, moulded impost blocks, and a keystone. The moulding of the impost blocks extends across the elevation between the windows. The first and second floors each have six-over-six sash windows, while the third floor has three-over-six sashes. A leaded string course separates the ground floor from the first floor, and there is a stucco band course between the first and second floors. The façade is topped with a heavily moulded cornice and parapet, behind which is a mansard roof that includes four dormer windows in the attic storey. The rear south elevation is built of brick.
