Description

Nos 3 and 5 Cheapside, built around 1900 by architects Joseph Morris and Son, is a corner building with six bays and three and a half storeys. It features Dutch stepped gables on the attic dormers and is constructed from grey brick in English bond, accented with red brick or terracotta dressings. The building has decorative bands at the transom and lintel levels, as well as moulded strings on the crow steps. There are terracotta decorations and relieving arches on the two larger gables, and the structure is topped with a tiled roof and four off-ridge chimneys. One chimney, located to the right of the corner gable, is an external stack with a corbelled design and an applied corbelled red brick diagonal shaft.

The tall gable on the corner has four lights, while the left side features a three-light gable. To the right, there are three gables with a configuration of two, three, and two lights, and at the far end, a wide five-light gable with a coped verge and sash ends is present. The first and second floor windows are adorned with decorative lintels, moulded transoms, and fluted mullions. The corner bay has four lights, and the Oxford Road bay includes an angled bay flanked by single lights. There are two five-light oriels facing Cheapside, which flank a five-light window on the second floor, with a revised pattern on the first floor that features a bracketed hood above. The outer bay is simpler in design. Heavy kidney-shaped rainwater heads are also notable. The ground floor has modern shop premises but retains the former fascia.
