Description
Nos 67 and 68 on Broad Street were built in the 1890s or around 1900 and are designed in a Norman Shaw style. The building has three storeys and an attic, constructed from grey brick with red brick quoins. There is a decorative terracotta band with dentil strips above the second floor. To the left, there is a two-storey recessed bay with five lights, featuring stucco decoration, small pane upper windows, and a pediment above the central windows. A similar design is found on the right side, but only on the second floor, as the first floor has been altered for a slightly later shop window that includes carved pairs of fascia brackets. The cornice is adorned with carved stucco scroll brackets, and there is an entablature with stucco acanthus decoration. A central rainwater head is present, and the roof is a mansard style covered with tiles, featuring a dentil purlin and two corniced dormers with two lights each, using glazing bar sashes, flanking a panel. The ridge is crested, and there are end chimneys with coped verges. The ground floor has modern shop fronts. This building is noted as an interesting example of the Norman Shaw style.
