Description
Nos. 42-51 Oaklands is a block of maisonettes and flats built in the 20th century. The building is constructed of heavily raked dark brickwork with horizontal white weatherboarding and bands of black vertical boarding to the upper floors, topped with flat roofs. It comprises six maisonettes on the upper two floors and four flats on the ground floor. Each dwelling has its own external doorway on the west side. The maisonettes are generally 2-bedroom, while the flats are 2- or 3-bedroom.
On the west, entrance-facing side, projecting brick walls create a series of irregularly shaped yards, enclosed by white-boarded timber gates. The original front doors are white-painted timber with two large glazed panels. The windows are centrally-hinged black timber casements; those on the upper floors are set within bands of black vertical boarding. The living room windows are taller, contributing to a varied pattern of fenestration. On the east, garden-facing side, the flats have glazed sliding doors with black timber surrounds that open onto semi-enclosed patios.
Original internal features remain in varying degrees across the dwellings, including built-in cupboards, glazed partitions separating living rooms from kitchens, and timber handrails to the stairs.
