Description

Nos. 35-41 Oaklands are a block of maisonettes and flats constructed in the 20th century. The building features heavily raked dark brickwork, with horizontal white weatherboarding and bands of black vertical boarding to the upper floors, and flat roofs. The block is three storeys high and contains four maisonettes on the upper two floors, alongside three flats on the ground floor. Each dwelling has its own external doorway on the north side. The flats and maisonettes offer varying plans, including 1-2 and 2-3 bedrooms respectively, with the maisonettes incorporating balconies to their first-floor living rooms.

On the north side (the entrance), projecting brick walls create a series of irregularly-shaped yards enclosed by white-boarded timber gates. The original front doors are white-painted timber with large glazed panels. The windows consist of centrally-hinged black timber casements, those to the upper floors set within bands of black vertical boarding; the living-room windows are taller, creating a varied pattern of fenestration. On the south side (the garden), the flats have glazed sliding doors with black timber surrounds leading to semi-enclosed patios. A continuous balcony runs along the first floor, with sections of the parapet lowered to enable views from the maisonette living rooms.

Internal features include original built-in cupboards, glazed partitions separating living rooms/kitchens, and timber handrails to the stairs, although their survival varies.
