Description
Simmonds Malthouse is a building said to date from the 1850s, attributed to one of the Briant architects. It is constructed of red brick and features an overlapped eaves cornice. The south side has two gables with hipped roofs and vents at the north end. There is a modern entrance located at the north-east. The south end displays cast iron tie rods in two stages to the south and four stages to the east, decorated with a hops pattern. The ground floor and upper part have small segmental headed windows. The west side consists of three bays with dividing piers, and two bays feature hop leaf tie rods. The roof is slate and hipped. Overall, it is a plain but impressive building, connected on the north side to a later malthouse. The interior is accessed from the east through a wide entrance with a segmental head, although the lower floors have been altered.
