Description
47 and 49 Castle Street are a pair of early 19th century terraced houses that have been converted into offices. The main façades are made of Bath Stone, while the rear is constructed of red brick. The roofs are covered with slate, and the windows and doors are made of timber.
Each house has a roughly square plan, is three bays wide, and consists of three storeys plus a basement beneath a pitched roof with a parapet. They share a party wall stack.
The front façade features dressed Bath Stone with a rusticated ground floor, string courses at the first and second floors, and a projecting parapet cornice. The two houses have mirrored elevations. The entrances are located in the outer bays, featuring four-panelled doors with fanlights set within round-arched openings. The ground floor windows are round-headed sashes with glazing bars. On the first floor, the windows are six-over-six sashes, with the outer ones adorned with carved architraves and cornices, while the central window is set within an incised round arch. The second floor windows are three-over-three sashes with incised surrounds.
The rear elevation, made of red brick, shows some alterations but retains the mirrored design of the houses, with doors in the outer bays and stair windows above, along with a single window on each floor.
