Description

59 and 61 Castle Street are a pair of terraced houses built in the early 19th century. They served as a women’s refuge from the 1880s until 1915 or later and were converted into offices in the late 1980s.

The houses are constructed from gault brick in Flemish bond, featuring a stucco cornice, with red brick at the rear and a slate roof. They are symmetrical, each consisting of three storeys plus a basement. Each house has three bays, with the main entrance and staircase located in the outer bays, and two chimney stacks in the central party wall. The roof is hipped and sits behind a low parapet.

The principal entrances feature six-panelled doors topped with fanlights, set within round-headed openings. The ground and first floor windows are six-over-six sashes, while the second floor windows are three-over-six sashes, all with flat gauged-brick arches. A stucco parapet cornice runs along the top of the building, and barred basement lights are located at the pavement edge.

The rear elevations are made of red brick and are mostly symmetrical, though some alterations have been made to the window arrangement. The windows at the rear are sashes of various configurations. The rear gardens of the two houses have been combined and re-landscaped in the late 20th or early 21st century.
